Northern California/Oregon Coast

January, 2004

I flew into the Sacramento area and planned on driving to Portland, Oregon via I-5. I got as far as Redding, where I stopped and got a room for the night. When I woke up the next morning, there was 8 inches of snow on the ground and the interstate was closed for the next 200 miles! It turned out to be one of those once-in-a-decade type snowstorms. The alternative route was coastal 101 - to get there I had to drive all the way back down to the San Francisco area because all of the roads were blocked off.
It ended up being a spectacular drive. I visited Redwood National Park and drove up the awesome Oregon Coast until I was able to get back to the interstate and continue north.
