Cheaha Mountain - 2407 feet

After leaving Florala, AL near the Florida highpoint I followed my Mapquest directions and ended up on an interstate going towards Birmingham. Since I was on vacation, I made a decision to avoid the interstates and take the less stressful Route 9 which was marked as "scenic" on the Rand McNally atlas. While it was a pleasant, rural drive that passed through a couple small towns I wouldn't exactly call it scenic. Cheaha State Park is kept up well. The area around the summit tower was run down. There are no views from the tower due to the many guide cables for radio towers and all the graffiti on the plexiglass windows. The park has a nice collection of cabins and chalets, as well as a motel and restaurant with a nice view. There is a pool built right into the side of the hill.

At the summit of Cheaha Mountain is an observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
